WHO
WE ARE

OUR

FOUNDER .

Most of the time when people get the advantage to come to the U.S. and have a good education and a good life, they seem to forget to go back home and help others.

— Anyars Salih

Ibrahim 'Anyers' Salih grew up in the Aboabo District of Kumasi and knows first-hand, how difficult it is for young people to achieve their full potential. Despite the advantages of a loving and supportive community the young people of Aboabo find it difficult to obtain vocational skills and education, due to the lack of resources and opportunities. While there are some who find the resources to continue their education and achieve upward mobility, the majority of the population will never get have the privilege of thinking beyond today’s survival.

I was one of the fortunate few to receive a scholarship through the One Dream Foundation to come to the United States. Throughout my journey I never forgot about conditions of poverty in my hometown, and as I prepared to finish my undergraduate studies at Hood College in Fredrick, Maryland, I increasingly thought about my friends who never had the same opportunities as me. Their perseverance through seemingly insurmountable challenges inspired and continues to inspire me and the work we do at SSDC. I hope that you will join me in providing opportunities and a brighter future for those in need.

OUR PARTNERS.

The Glenelg community has been a constant partner from the start. Glenelg is a regular donor of the foundation. They host school events and activities to raise funds for The Center, as well as frequently featuring us in the school magazine. We hold a table at the annual International Bazaar, which also raises funds for SSDC.

When Anyars first arrived in the USA, he played basketball for a summer AAU team through the One Dream Foundation that sponsored his trip to America. In order to stay in the United States, Anyars needed to be recruited to a high school. Enter Glenelg Country School. Anyars received a basketball scholarship and was hosted by a Glenelg family that ultimately became Anyars’ second family here in the States. This is really just the surface of his experience with the Glenelg community. From school leadership and administration, to teachers and counselors, and even students and other Glenelg parents, everyone in the community did the absolute most to make sure that Anyars had a successful transition both academically and personally.

With the help and mentorship of  Glenelg's Global Education and Community Service Director, Mr. David Weeks, Anyers was able to actualize his passion for helping others with the establishment of the Salih Self-Development Center. Glenelg has been pivotal in the growth of SSDC and as our first and most generous partner we cannot thank them enough.

Since 2012, the Fund for the Future of Our Children has been supporting SSDC by investing in the leadership training of Anyers through numerous key initiatives. Since then the Fund For the Future of Our Children has supported SSDC through countless grants and donations of equipment, such as computers and printers for our Computer Skills Training Center in the Aboabo district of Kumasi, Ghana
